X + Y (A Young Beautiful Mind in the U.S.A) tells a story of a socially awkward teenage math prodigy as he finds new confidence when he lands a spot on the British maths olympiad squad. Nathan has traits of autism and synesthesia- a neurological phenomenon where one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Nathan’s synesthesia occurs when he perceives numerical patterns and as a result sees colours.
The Brewery was tasked with making a a visual representation of what Nathan experiences. After a range of different techniques were tested, a combination of analogue and digital lens effects were used to invoke this unique phenomenon.
The Brewery also created a violent car crash for an early scene of the film. Live action plates were re-projected onto digital models and combined with a green screen shoot to achieve the effect.
